Eriodictyon californicum (Hook. & Arn.) Torr. / Yerba santa
Eriodictyon californicum (Hook. & Arn.) Torr.
Abstract
The leaves of Eriodictyon californicum (Hook. & Arn.) Torr., the (California) yerba santa, have been used for a long time by the Native Americans as a remedy for the treatment of a variety of ailments, including lung diseases, gastrointestinal disorders, pain and wounds. In America, the leaves are still used as a remedy whereas in Germany the herbal drug is solely a substance for homoeopathic preparations. Phytochemical research has led to the isolation and elucidation of a high number of flavanones and flavones and phenolic acid derivatives. Only a few modern in vitro studies have been conducted giving the first explanation for the traditional indications. Up to now, no in vivo, clinical nor toxicity studies are available to urgently evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of this herbal drug.
